Mary McAleese became the second woman president of Ireland in 1997. Before becoming head of state elected, she was a lawyer, journalist, academic and Pro Vice-Chancellor Queen’s University. Despite having represented Ireland at a conference abroad, the first child of nine brothers is not held political office before the general election. Irish residents get to know her as a broadcaster and social activist. Throughout her leadership, McAleese has set herself to build bridges between the communities of North and South of Ireland.
